Facebook has changed they way I experience the holidays. Since several of my relatives in Canada have joined we can now keep in touch and wish each other well, share photos and share stories with the click of a button. The convenience is priceless. However, this year I had a friend in New York post a good question just before thanksgiving, “should I mass text or facebook everyone this turkey day?” I realized that last year I did just that, mass text and post up a status change. How pathetic and impersonal! I decided he was right. For friends I am not particularly close with I did still wish them well via facebook but for people I call family they got something more than a remote message.

On thanksgiving, while in Walnut Creek, I sat out on the porch at my Aunt’s house and I made some phone calls. I left messages and got to talk to friends who were shocked and delighted to hear my voice. They were truly surprised I took the time to call. In reality it took no time at all. Today everything is so instant, we get frustrated when anything takes longer than four seconds. I was on the phone for roughly an hour. I talked to friends I knew weren’t going to be with their families this year, my best friend (who I found out was in need of a good chat), and friends on military bases far from home. It felt wonderful to hear their voices, laugh with them and remind them that I am a real not just digital friend. No technology will ever replace face to face communication but at least the telephone has been around long enough to still mean something.

This Christmas I plan on doing the same. I’ll sit in a room by myself and remind the people that I love that I am and always will be a real friend.
